From the Desk of a Music Video Production Company PA:
Hey there! My name is Alexandra, and I’ve been interning with Gordon Cowie Films—a music video production company that operates out of both LA and Phoenix—for about three months now. If you’re reading this because you’re curious about the work of a music video producer or you want to know what goes on behind the scenes, then you’re in the right place!
Our most recent project involved creating an intricate music video with an environmental message for The Diamond Underground, an indie rock group based in Ohio. This was the third video that Gordon—our music video director—has produced for the artist, and in an effort to really push our creative boundaries, we decided to approach the video as a short film. That meant writing out a narrative-driven storyboard and character sketches, scouring the city for (and even special ordering) props, designing costumes, identifying the perfect shooting locations, and, most importantly, finding the right people to bring it all together…
This was our first time doing a large, multi-day casting, and the experience was nothing short of intense. We had a great turnout of actors ready and willing to tackle some pretty challenging cold reads. There’s nothing more unnerving that being handed unfamiliar material and having to deliver a spectacular performance on the spot—a task made even more intimidating when you’re asked to do so in front of a camera and music video director!
When all was said and done, we had found ourselves a cast of twenty-four brilliant, hardworking actors—the largest group of performers we’ve worked with yet! Our protagonist, a young daredevil on the lookout for trouble, was played by the charming and talented Adam Navas. James Mitchell, Sheila Boren, and Roger Palaski were delightfully sinister as the corrupt Tycoon, his Trophy Wife, and the crooked Mayor.
What really makes a music video stand out? It’s all in the details. There was no such thing as a “small role” in this production, and our cameo players and extras were a testimony to that fact! Elisa Quiroz (as a fierce and fashionable gambler) and Dylan Pettus (as the steady-handed dealer) helped bring our opening poker scene to life, while Kevin Wathey and Melody Gillaim made for quite the convincing pair of activist leaders.
Peter Oldak terrified and thrilled as the Tycoon’s bloodthirsty bodyguard, Zahra Talieh was an absolute natural as the local reporter hungry for her next story, and Jedediah Jones delivered a surprisingly heartfelt performance as a construction worker who makes a rather odd discovery. We were also joined by a very enthusiastic crew of actors posing as environmental protestors: Brandon Gudenau, Vanessa Baer, Kirk Levingar, Charles Nemec, Sky Eigan, Jordan Rodriguez, Victoria Comeaux, and Lewandowski family.
After this shoot, if there’s one thing we can say about our work, it’s that there is never a dull moment!
