Above the Radio and I launched a contest giving away a free music video to the best band that submitted, I chose Avery as the winning band. Upon the first meeting with Mariah, we came up with the concept of having kids portray the story, so that they may bring some light to a heavy subject. The music performance scenes for their new music video “Hospital Call”, was filmed in Yuma, Arizona. Yuma was an awesome location to capture unique sites. The main children in the video had previous acting experience, which definitely made filming this video easier. In future videos, I hope that the bands will have the opportunity to utilize actors as well.

Getting to know the band:

The formation of the band Avery began in March of 2011 by Allison Galbreath and Mariah DeRaet. After playing together for a couple months, Brad Mitchell joined the mix and changed their game by further producing their simplistic style with slide guitars and ambient lead parts. Shortly after in July of 2012, some heavier percussion was needed and luckily Eric Estrada was happy to oblige- thus completing and perfecting their band.

We make music because it makes us happy. I write songs to get the sentiment out of my head so I can move on.  Almost like writing your problems on a piece of paper and burning it.

Despite making somewhat serious music, we are all fairly silly people.  Sometimes in band practice we’ll only sing and talk in Bob Dylan voices.  There have also been rare times where Avery turns into it’s hardcore twin “Cancer Stain”.

Ideally we’d like to tour and share our music with as many people as possible. We can only hope that our music helps someone, like the way so many artists have helped us.

We are heavily influenced by bands such as:

Camera Obscura
Julie Doiron
Damien Jurado
Pedro the Lion
Cat Power

Returning from Flagstaff from a 3 day shoot, I was excited to start editing the content, I knew that this would be, by far the best of my work! Electronic Indie Band-Roseblack and Dreamer, were completely open to allowing me be their creative eyes. The trust was there100%, which is why I believe this video turned out so successful. When bands hire a director, they are paying that director to help portray a visual that represents their video. However, most bands have a problem handing the reigns over to the director. In situations as such, all a band will accomplish is hiring an expensive, over experienced cameraman. The video for Roseblack and Dreamer’s song “Hush Hush”, was captured at awesome locations, such as: the woods of snowflake, and a famous historic hotel, Monte Vista, which is known for their themed rooms and being haunted.

In addition to the great locations and trustfulness of the band, this video also had in their corner, LA based choreographer, Talia Favia, who assisted on the choreographing Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts”, which has received over 86 million views. I would also like to thank professional dancers, Savannah Harrison and Angelica Dewitt as well as Ford Robert Black Model/Actress, Christa Sandstrom and Actress Karen Barajas.
Roseblack and Dreamer’s single “Hush Hush” will be released mid January.

This was the first video I had ever made and it turned out way better than I ever expected. My dream was to be a film director so I made the decision to leave my current 9-5 job and completely devote my time to making my dream a reality. At that time the only production experience I had was acting in short films and theater. I had no technical background and didn’t own any equipment. In a perfect world I would’ve had $40-$80,000 to go to film school but that wasn’t the case so I needed an alternative to get the wheels turning. Luckily I found just that. A friend of mine had just attended DV workshops with respected documentarian Aron Ranen who teaches a seven-day course on documentary filmmaking, currently based in LA. The great thing about this course is that Aron has a corporate video background, so he teaches storytelling techniques as well as corporate video guidelines.  He covers editing, lighting, sound production, framing, interview techniques and the seven different ways to tell a story in a documentary. This is a perfect course to take if you are a beginner or have only 1 to 2 years of experience in video production. Especially if you’re looking to do corporate videos such as testimonials, mission videos, events and commercials. Everyone who attends this class makes their own independant film. The video above is the film I made while attending.
This class has been very helpful in furthering my career. I’ve many times over made back the money I spent on it!!
